This has been the debate for a while.
I personally feel that the phones are equals and picking either one makes you a fanboy because there isn’t a great reason or picking either one over the other.

When you lock your phone, Siri still speaks to you and the lock screen is live, navigating. Yes, live in lock screen while the upcoming driving instructions are displayed at the top.
The position of your vehicle is a lot more accurate than what you get with Google maps. It gives it a very high quality, expensive GPS feel to it.
Overall, a huge success in turn by turn directions and long overdue! I’m only in Beta 2, if there will be improvements, I do not know where they would be. It’s a perfect system.
I just learned that T-Mobile’s 4G network is really just a beefed up 3G network. HSPA+, the same network as AT&T’s “lol4G”, the same network the iPhone 4s runs on.
So I guess that brings the dispute back to AT&T vs. Verizon on who has the fastest 4G and T-Mobile takes the crown for fastest 3G network.
The Tumblr revamp is AMAZING!!! This list doesn’t say it all when you’re in this new interface. Probably the cleanest app I have now in terms of function, features, UI, and overall smoothness!
For those people who hesitate to get apps, get this update. It’s not that ordeal when you’re afraid to get a FaceBook update because it used to get less stable with every update.
A very strongly worded article but it makes valid points. I must say I actually agree with it. I think he makes Google sound more like an enemy than a competitor.
Google’s going to take a huge blow without iOS revenue. Less than 5% of Android users have upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich and I’m willing to bet that more than 80% of those Ice Cream Sandwich users only bought into the OS rather than upgrading their fragmented and abandoned device. Why abandoned? Nearly 70% of all Android users are still on 2.0~2.3.3. They need to get their act together before people realize it’s more expensive to own an Android device than an iPhone.
Like the article said, Google makes more money from iOS than Android and Google makes nothing from the phones sold running Android. That’s where the problem is. But “open source” is valued too much to change that. I feel bad for Google though, they can’t make the right decision without pissing off a substantial amount of customers. That would result in people switching to iOS and nobody wants to see that. I guess they’ll continue to just salvage the situation like they have been from the beginning.
I don’t mean to hate on Google but they have definitely had enough time to rip off Siri by now and plenty of time for refinement since Siri is already out and they could compare them head to head in their labs. That being said, I’m not impressed. S voice clearly had trouble just understanding what John was saying and that contributed to the problem. Also, it was running on a new phone that’s supposed to be better than the iPhone by now so S voice had the advantage. I also didn’t like that it didn’t organize the sushi bars he looked for by rating. Overall it’s probably just as useful as Siri but we’re expecting a Siri revamp on the 11th (at least I am).
I am personally noticing a pattern with the way Google implements the ideas of other companies. S voice really does just look like a knock off of Siri with nothing special to bring to the table. I know this is not true because of the dozens of articles I’ve read on it’s capabilities, but in practical applications, S voice is now Google’s hyped up Siri. As far as the average Android customer is concerned, “Yay, Android has Siri now.”
Has anyone used Ping to find music? I have.
Here’s my idea. Pandora integration with your iPod. It will read your ratings for the songs you have and use Genius data and Pandora data mixed to form results. Then you can like songs on this Pandora tab WITHIN your iPod and help you discover new content. A song comes on that you really love and you can hit a button that will take you to their album where you can listen to it and buy it right there.
Apple’s iPod is already the best thing on the market for music but this merger would make it an unstoppable force. Possibly impacting their platform as much as Siri did. I had the Siri app before Apple had bought it, just like I’ve had the Pandora app for years. What do you think?
Let’s break this down rumor by rumor.
1. Abandoning teardrop design for another glass body.
I never believed in the teardrop design, it’s not very practical and goes against Apples appreciation for symmetry. It is also not practical from a design standpoint seeing that the battery would also have to be a teardrop shape or take up the whole upper portion of the phone making it so top heavy and uncomfortable to hold. You know these are the things Apple thinks about. Where would the components go? And the idea of having curved boards probably scares them more that it does me!
2. Being longer (or taller) than the current iPhone.
It’s possible but not as dramatically depicted in their concept renderings. This would only work if they really did increase the screen size and change the aspect ratio. I’ll get to that.
3. A metal panel on the back.
Are you kidding me? That’s atrocious. They wouldn’t have two different surface types on the back, Apple loves to brag about how beautiful their phones are so it’ll be one consistent surface and it won’t be metal. Why? Having a glass front and a metal back makes for a horrible combination when holding the phone. The feel of metal on your fingers and glass on your thumbs will take away from the experience. It’s especially ugly considering what today’s iPhones look like.
4. Manufactured with Gorilla Glass 2.
I say this is very probable. If they’re using Gorilla Glass now, why wouldn’t they use only the best they have to offer for their phones? It can either be thinner and have equal strength or be the same thickness and be much stronger. In theory, according to the source, the phone could be 20% thinner and you know Apple can’t pass that up. I’d expect thinner glass if they do use Gorilla Glass 2.
5. An increase in screen size to 4 inches.
Don’t we see this one every year? Look, Apple didn’t just throw a dart onto a board with screen sizes to come up with 3.5 inches. Millions went into research for this number, just like any decision made at Apple. The iPhone is a PHONE, that you carry in your pocket. Therefore it is small. iPad is a tablet, large and powerful with a lot of screen to offer. They won’t make the iPhone screen bigger for the same reason they don’t make the iPad smaller. It wouldn’t serve it’s purpose. A 4 inch screen will require two thumbs to use (Like the iPad does now). How practical does that sound for a phone? Apple also likes their developers while hating fragmentation, which is what this screen would create on a smaller scale. All apps would have to be redone. Releasing this phone would mean that in the first month the older iPhones will have their vast library of 500,000+ apps still available while the new iPhone will have maybe 5,000 native apps. Where would Apple’s beloved bragging rights go? “Best app market.” It would become smaller than the market found on the Windows Phone. If you have a full sized tablet available you don’t need a larger phone and if you have a small phone available you don’t need a smaller tablet. Do you see how Apple products work together? They want you to buy both devices and I’m willing to bet that a larger iPhone screen means decreased iPad sales and higher manufacturing prices for the iPhone. Where’s Apple’s win in that?
6. New dock.
I don’t know about you but 16 pins seems like a lesser amount compared to 30… But that’s just me, I’m no genius. I’m not discrediting this one but I just don’t see the point. The 30-pin connector has been a HUGE success at Apple and doesn’t need replacing. Supporting speeds higher than any USB port offers today. A future proof aspect of Apple products, why change it?
